The savings of this promotion are fantastic. Although I will be doing more fundraising for the foundation by donating a portion of the proceeds from sessions to the SLF, this kind of offer is a rare and special event!!  Keep in mind you may want to get your family photos done before July 1st!!!

We have an 8% tax hike on services coming July 1, 2010. Lucky us!! Currently photo sessions are taxed only 5% because it is a service that has no tangible product. Starting July 1st, that will change.  You will have the added 8% tax on your photo session which of course goes straight to the government coffers. There will be no additional taxes on prints, canvases and albums that have been taxed the 5% + 8% for a total of 13%, they will continue to be taxed the same.

So you have until 3 pm this Thursday May 29th to reach me by phone to book a session, after that I will be checking e-mail every few days while in Africa and get back to you within 3-5 days. If you are looking to buy a Gift Certificate for a friend or family this is the perfect time to purchase and beat the 8% tax increase on your session.

Thanks everyone for all your support and I look forward to posting pictures upon my return from this exciting and historical event. Below is a message from The Stephen Lewis Foundation web site with links to additional information:

On May 7th and 8th 2010, a truly historic event will take place in Africa. Five hundred grandmothers from across sub-Saharan Africa will come together in Swaziland for the first international Grandmothers’ Gathering on the continent. On May 8th, up to 2,000 grandmothers will hold a solidarity march in the city of Manzini. They will call for action the world over to support them as they struggle at the frontlines of the AIDS pandemic to create a hopeful future for their families.

Meet Mary Balendemu, a grandmother from Uganda who will be a delegate at the Gathering. We are also thrilled to announce that forty-four Canadian Delegates from the grandmothers’ movement here will be travelling to Swaziland to join the Gathering!!  They will be attending workshops, sharing stories and returning to Canada with the messages of their African peers.

Meet Donna Anthony, a grandmother from Victoria, BC, who will be a delegate at the Gathering.

Help us raise 6.5 million Aeroplan Reward Miles for the Gathering

By donating your Aeroplan Reward Miles, you can help make this historic event a reality. Donated miles will be used to facilitate the travel of the African and Canadian grandmothers.

Since 2006, Aeroplan and its members have contributed nearly 35 million miles to the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

As I slowly ease back into motherhood, work and school after the holidays,  I realize I need to make some changes in the up coming year.  It will serve me well to reflect on what is working well, what I didn’t do well and decide the new plan. As a parent, photographer and student I crammed so much into last year that by mid December I was just exhausted!! Don’t get me wrong, I accomplished so many great things and more!! I’m grateful that I did because truly I believe this year will be even better because of the foundation that was laid, but  I’m still trying to figure out the workflow of how to make my family and photography a priority and still fit in things like workouts, date night, reading books for fun and diner with our friends!!

More on that later but for now I’ll share with you the way 2009 ended for me. I was driving down to Florida with my taller half and the kids when I found out that the much anticipated Toronto Life Wedding Guide 2010 was on the stands. Ricki Horowitz Photography  &  Kristina of Sugartree Photography, if you recall, teamed up for the wedding of Ilana Landsberg-Lewis & Lorraine Sagato of Parachute Club in September ‘09 and that wedding is now featured in the The Toronto Life Wedding Guide on page 68. It was a great way to end a photographic year that was full of excitement, hard work and great new friends!!!

Look at this gorgeous family. Mom was so excited to do this session as was I. The girls are just insanely sweet and everyone was so relaxed and happy; too relaxed perhaps. We lost one to a spontaneous nap towards the end but we continued shooting and followed that sweetness into what turned out to be some great images.

One year old birthday’s can be so much fun – for the moms and I!! You never know how the little ones will react to a birthday cake. Some who have never had icing before love the new sweet taste and some kids just can’t get over the mess it makes on thier hands. Either way, its always so much fun to photograph. Happy 1st Birthday baby “J”.

Too Much Mess!

When Ilana Landsberg Lewis & Lorraine Sagato told me they were getting married and asked me to help plan their wedding and be their photographer I was overwhelmed with love, joy and  happiness for them and sincerely honored that they would want me to document such an important day in their lives. I was deeply touched when they told me they loved my photographic style and the intimate candid images I love to capture and that  it was exactly what they wanted for their wedding. Sitting at an informal diner by Lorraine the gourmet, Ilana, Lorraine’s sister Carla and myself, we discussed countryside locations, white billowing table cloths, simplicity, intimacy, good food, great friends &  family, artisan Italian breads and good wine….the stuff romanticized Tuscany family reunions are made of.

It was to be a simple wedding, and my photography, my contribution to the “budget wedding” and a labour of love to one of my dearest friends, her partner and children, all who hold an incredible place in the hearts of myself and my children. I am completly overwhelmed by this wedding.  Overwhelmed by the hugeness it became. Not only am I overwhelmed by the love, admiration, respect, excitement, awe and lust these two beautiful people have for each other, but also for the deep love, joy, respect, admiration and loyalty their friends and family have for them! The generosity of their love and spirit for family and friendship was returned to them a hundred fold by the attendees of their wedding and especially, without question, the magnificent host, Salah Bachir, who I imagine would rival, if not outdo, Coco Chanel, Anaise Nin, Gertrude Stein, and Gianni Versace. Yep, you guessed it – I ended up having nothing to do with the wedding plans – but there were white table cloths! The wedding was ordained by the couples good friend Eve Ensler, playwright, performer, and activist, and author of  THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES.

If you know this couple and their families you know words are their lives. The playful brilliance of words, the intellectual and motivational power of words, the melody of words, the sexiness of words. This wedding encompassed them all. The true love that was expressed by friends and family for Ilana and Lorraine was overwhelming and at times I forgot that I was supposed to be taking pictures. I wiped my eyes, tried to focus and resume my task of the day. I sincerely appreciate and thank Kristina of Sugar Tree Photography for joining me for the day. She is such a pleasure to work with and contributed not only with her photographic talent and charming persona but also helped me with the delicate balance of being emotionally involved with the couple and their families and  still having to do the professional job of a photographer.

It was a truly magnificent, unique and special day for all involved and I can just imagine that the Landsberg-Lewis-Sagato households around the GTA are all still celebrating and recounting every beautiful detail!!

So here I leave you with a sneak peak into the most beautiful wedding I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing!

About 2 months ago a photographer told me about how creative and free she felt with her new iPhone. Knowing that getting into Mac again after a 12 year absence was right around the corner, I took the plunge and bought the iPhone. Now I understand completely. There are days that even when you are a photographer and usually love having your camera around your neck, you just don’t want one.  Knowing there are a million special or funny moments that will happen in my kids day and knowing that my iPhone can take pretty good pictures and videos gives me the freedom to capture even the little things in our day that just make me laugh or that I want the kids and I to remember.

Love x 3 !!! I could not have been more gaga over the beautiful belly that was photographed in natural light during this photo session. Then to see how the images translated to B&W nearly caused my head to explode. Don’t be surprised to see more of both in the future. The 5th image is colour – loved it and just had to share.  Thanks to Sarah for the patience & beautiful belly and Wendy Rombough for freeing up my creativity.

My friend Gill has a friend from Law School who’s daughter was born with a brain cancer called Neuroblastoma.  Every year, they hold a fund raising picnic, Sunday In the Park With Lilah, to raise money for the Sick Kids Hospital.  It is a great time with lots of great stuff for the kids.  Last year we went and had a great time. There was a baseball throwing event at a Blue Jays booth, jumping castles, science experiments,  music concerts with local well known musicians, face painting &  lots of food and treats !! We were all very happy to be there so were the tons and I mean TONS of other families!! Hope you can make it! Lilah’s Fund
